Abstract:

Steel sleeves have been applied in shield arrivals in job sites in Guangzhou and Fuoshan. Analysis is made on the advantages (including wide application scope, safe shield arrival, recycling of steel sleeves and small land occupation area) and disadvantages (including long construction period, high cost, poor tightness and complex shield arrival operations) of the application of steel sleeves in shield arrivals. The applicability of the steel sleeves in EPB shield arrivals is discussed. It is concluded that successful shield arrivals can be achieved by using steel sleeves, instead of ground reinforcement, provided that proper execution plan is prepared and various factors are taken into account.
