Abstract: To ensure the safe construction of tunnel complexes crossing active faults, physical model tests and numerical simulations are used to investigate the mechanical response of the surrounding rock and determine the minimum clear spacing of multiple tunnels crossing an active strike-slip fault. First, the need to investigate the spacing of fault-crossing tunnels is demonstrated based on the strain distribution around the tunnels, fracture patterns in the intertunnel rock mass, and stress distribution characteristics obtained from the model tests. Subsequently, numerical simulations are conducted to examine how various factors affect the mechanical response of the surrounding rock of multiple tunnels crossing a strike-slip fault. Finally, based on multiple numerical simulations, the minimum clear spacing is determined using the distribution of plastic zones as a qualitative indicator and tunnel-wall displacement and the yield approach index as quantitative indicators. The effects of various factors on the minimum clear spacing are also analyzed. The results indicate that (1) fault dislocation markedly intensifies interactions between adjacent tunnels. Compared with the single-tunnel case, twin tunnels exhibit more complex surrounding-rock fracture patterns. The peak tensile strains around Tunnels A and B increase by 35.12% and 32.75%, respectively, while the corresponding peak compressive strains increase by 87.50% and 37.00%, respectively; (2) damage to the surrounding rock of the multiple-tunnel system accumulates and expands with increasing fault displacement; (3) the middle rock pillar is the critical load-bearing component governing the stability of the tunnel complex; and (4) larger intertunnel spacing should be adopted in areas with poor surrounding-rock mechanical properties within the fault zone, greater tunnel burial depths, or relatively gentle fault dips, thereby improving the structural safety of the tunnels.
