Abstract: The tunnels of JakartaBandung Highspeed Railway in Indonesia are constructed in volcanic deposits and highintensity seismic zone. In order to solve the problems in tunnel design, such as the applicability of Chinese standards, localization of materials, and review by local professional associations etc., comparative analysis and calculation is conducted for Chinese and international tunnel standards by considering the natural, social and technical characteristics of the project. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) By studying the technical standards in Indonesia, the design method shall be selected properly according to the technical characteristics of the project based on the technical system of railway tunnels in China. (2) For the load on a tunnel in volcanic deposits, the calculation method in Code for Design of Railway Tunnel is applicable. The standard of buried depth for a tunnel in Grade Ⅴ volcanic soil can be taken as 60 m. The swelling pressure can be determined quantitatively according to the stress ratio of the surrounding rock. (3) For the seismic design standard, the response displacement method and Code for Seismic Design of Urban Rail Transit Structures are more appropriate. (4) For the standard of disaster prevention and evacuation in tunnels, the Chinese standard of railway tunnels is applicable for the project. Local steel can be an alternative plan for design standard of tunnel steel. For land requisition and building demolition, the characteristics of private land ownership in Indonesia should be considered. The technical standard of building protection can refer to Chinese experiences.
