Abstract: Haizhu Bay tunnel is a crucial component for establishing a fast connection between the central urban area and the south station hub in Guangzhou. The general design is challenging due to its complex connection network, superlarge diameter, complex geological conditions, and dense structures along the line. The significance of the tunnel construction is elaborated, and the optimal plane line is explored taking into account overall plan, farmland occupation, land acquisition and demolition as well as environmental effects, and then the reasonable technical indicators are proposed. Meanwhile, the mechanical disturbance evaluation indicators and standards for sensitive structures along the line are formulated based on the conditions and characteristics of tunnel construction, and the tunnel construction methods are analyzed and selected. The crosssection schemes for the recommended shield method are compared and selected, and mechanical response of existing structures induced by different section schemes are evaluated by using numerical method. Clarifying the control conditions, the design of plane and longitudinal sections for the recommended scheme as well as the key technologies are analyzed. In view of the construction characteristics of Haizhu Bay tunnel, a reasonable general design scheme has been formed through a comprehensive analysis of multiple factors.
