It is of great necessity to establish a scientific method to assess the service performance of the tunnel structure, so as to deal with the deterioration and maintenance requirements of the tunnel structure. The first shieldbored tunnel in China was built in Shanghai, and so far a large number of shieldbored tunnels have been built in Shanghai. In the paper, the performance deterioration factors of the shieldbored tunnel structure and their relationship with the tunnel service history is analyzed and induced, the structural level of the shieldbored tunnel is classified, the contents and the procedure of the examination of the shieldbored tunnel structure are determined, the assessment method for the performance of the shieldboredtunnel structure is determined, thus a system is formed for the assessment of the service performance of shieldbored tunnels. 
