Abstract

A method of calculating the elastic modulus of a fiberreinforced polymer utility tunnel using ring stiffness is proposed to accurately select the value of elastic modulus of fiberreinforced polymers in calculations. Furthermore, the deformation and related law of characteristic points of the fiberreinforced polymer utility tunnel are examined via numerical simulation. Finally, static and dynamic load tests are conducted in a shallowburied fiberreinforced polymer utility tunnel in Deyang, China. The following results are obtained: (1) The pipe elastic modulus calculated using ring stiffness is essentially feasible. (2) The deformation of the shallowburied fiberreinforced polymer utility tunnel is closely related to the backfilling quality but does not exhibit a clear relationship with the internal annular rib. (3) The deformation and related law of the utility tunnel obtained through numerical simulation under static and dynamic loads are consistent with the field test results.
