Abstract: No. 7 tunnel of the first phase of Tao River Diversion Project in Gansu Province is excavated by a singleshield TBM. During the construction of the tunnel, water/mud/sand bursting occurs. Countermeasures, including advance geology prediction, backfilling grouting for gaps behind the segment, advance consolidation grouting and water/sand releasing after diluting, are taken to cope with the situation. 
