Abstract:
With the continuous development of the city, land obtaining has become more and more difficult. Land conservation and efficient utilization of the land resources become the trend of urban development. In the case of Taipei Railway Station Special District, due to the rapid development of Taipei City, the original train rails and the longdistance bus transportation built on the ground surface had already impacted the public transport. Therefore, 30 years ago, government of Taipei City planned the subterranean maps of Taiwan Railway, Taipei MRT, Taiwan High Speed Rail (the last two were under planning stage), commercial zone, and pavement simultaneously, then constructed in sequence. And it also mapped out a threedimensional longdistance bus transfer post on the ground surface, let vehicles and pedestrians commute between the ground viaducts and underground space. This space will not only make a huge move to integrate transportation of rail traffic in the effective use of underground space, but also reduce impaction on the longdistance bus space on the ground surface. Turning massive railways into underground space decreased the disturbance to the ground surface traffics, built safe and convenient space for pedestrian and travelers, and brought the alternative underground economy. Moreover, it is especially appropriate to discuss the underground space development topic through Taiwan experience, due to the dense population and the remarkable utilization of land.
Key words: Taiwan, underground space utilization, underground railway project, underground shopping mall, Taipei Bus Station, BOT project
