Abstract: There are two offshore artificial islands and a longest highway immersed tunnel in the Hong KongZhuhaiMacao bridge project. First, the major technological advancement of immersed tunnels and artificial islands is discussed. Second, prospects are made in the new construction techniques of sustainable and green immersed tunnels and artificial islands, which include: (1) the factory flowline prefabrication method for 80 mlong immersed tube with high efficiency, less land occupancy, and fewer processing steps based on the factory flowline prefabrication of 180 mlong segmented or semirigid immersed tubes; (2) the negative freeboard (buoyancy) immersed tunnel design methodology and floataid construction philosophy, as well as their advantages with regards to longdistance transport and multiple tube prefabrication; (3) the improvement directions of the positivewater stop deployable connectionreversible closure joint for the immersed tunnel; and (4) new construction methods for prefabricated artificial islands based on the comparison of construction concepts between conventional artificial island construction method and deepinsert steel cylinder and auxiliary cells constriction method.
