Study on Ultimate Lateral Loadbearing Capacity of
Shallow Foundations with Columns

Abstract:

The lateral failure modes of the foundations with columns are analyzed and studied by means of analyzing the lateraloverturningresistance mechanisms and stability of the shallow foundations with columns. The theoretical formula for the ultimate lateral loadbearing capacity of the shallow foundations with columns is deduced on basis of the limit analysis principle. The theoretical formula is applied in the engineering analysis and the result, compared to the formula specified in the current specifications, is extremely satisfactory. The study indicates that the assumption made in the deduction is reliable and applicable and the result obtained by this formula is valuable for engineering practices.
