Abstract:

The types and magnitudes of tunnel anomalies typically vary, such that diagnosing anomaly causes is extremely complicated. Additionally, identifying the mechanisms and variations in lining loadings is difficult. Consequently, maintenance and rehabilitation technologies cannot be applied to tunnels directly. As the number of tunnels requiring rehabilitation is increasing, determining the effectiveness of tunnel maintenance and rehabilitation technologies is necessary. This study investigates the effectiveness of tunnel maintenance and rehabilitation procedures, and examines the methods and technologies used in Europe, the United States and Japan. The countermeasures for the three main anomalies, i.e., lining deterioration/spalling, water leakage and changes in external loading, are discussed. Finally, this study determines the suitability of these countermeasures for projects in Taiwan. Analytical results will be a reference for future tunnel maintenance projects.
