A Comparison of M+E Installation in Long Tunnel in China andTaiwan: Case Study on Wuta-Guanyin-Gufeng Tunnel and Qinling Tunnel

Abstract: Taiwan SuHua Highway 9# mountainous section improvement project is about 38.4 km long. There are a 13.1 kmlong twintube one direction tunnel group on Nan'ao to He'ping section ( Wuta tunnel is 0.5 km, Guanyin tunnel is 7.9 km and Gufeng Tunnel is 4.7 km). The project is expected to be completed in 2017. In order to push forward SuHua Highway improvement project, The Office of SuHua Highway improvement project is set up and a traffic control center will be built in the future. Qinling Tunnel, the total investment of 2.793 billion yuan (about 126 billion NT dollars), is a twintube onedirection 4 lane tunnel and is designed according to Freeway Standard Design. The 18.02 km long Qinling Tunnel is the longest twintube onedirection tunnel in the world, it was started in 2001 and completed in 2007. We can pass through the Qinling Mountains just only in 15 minutes. Comparison and contrast is made between "M+E" facilities of WutaGuanyinGufeng Tunnel Group and that of Qinling Tunnel, including engineering geological conditions, tunnel type, the connection tunnel, operation and ventilation, traffic control surveillance, and disaster prevention programs. It can provide references for the construction of SuHua Highway improvement project and the Taiwan Strait tunnel project in the future.
