A Discussion on the Tunnel Transportation and Construction Methods  for the Taiwan Straitcrossing Tunnel

Abstract:

The possibility of using electric vehicles and the layout of the Taiwan straitcrossing tunnel are discussed. Some key controlling factors, including ventilation, transportation, equipment reliability and construction schedule of the TBM tunneling are analyzed. The conclusion is that an artificial island is necessary, considering the reliability of technologies and the necessary control over the construction schedule. Finally, a proposal on the function and structure of the artificial island is presented, as well as suggestions for further study.
