Abstract:

In pipe jacking construction, the pipes are under different external forces, of which the jacking force could be the most important one. The jacking force can be estimated by the resistance during pipe jacking, which comprises the resistance from the cutter head and the resistance at the surface of the pipes. Applying inadequately large jacking force could damage the pipes and cause the stoppage, therefore, the estimation and control of the jacking force is crucial for a pipe jacking project. However, it is rather difficult and short of theoretical study, which motivates this study. This study aims to theoretically derive the jacking force of a curved pipe jacking based on the statics. Besides the verification of the derived solution, this study compared the forces from the derived formula and other empirical formulas. According to the discrepancy, an adjustment factor is included in the formula to make the theoretical formula more applicable.
