Abstract:

Identifying causes for lining anomalies is essential for structural safety evaluation and necessary repair design for a built tunnel. Based on particular inspection cases and scientific literature, potential mechanical causes for lining cracks are examined in detail, and the relationship between causes and five patterns of lining cracks are identified. This study investigates the characteristics of these typical cracks, characterizes their spatial distribution digitally, and develops an approach of diagnosing mechanical causes for lining cracks of mountain tunnels. A railway tunnel is investigated to validate the proposed approach of diagnosing causes for lining cracks, and it is used as an example demonstrating the use of the proposed approach.
