Abstract:

Underground construction activities impose high risks of structural damage or operational interruption to proximate twin MRT bored tunnels as excessive rail displacement or lining deformation may occur as a result of ground stress redistribution. To reduce the probability of hazard occurrence or severity of consequences, the construction of Kaohsiung MRT R11 permanent station adopted risk management to control risks through identifying, analyzing and evaluating possible risks. Risk reduction measures are developed and taken when risk increases to unacceptable level. In the approach of systematic risk management, risk monitoring and communication are conducted based on the information obtained from construction supervision, tunnel inspection and instrumentation along with risk evaluation. Risk monitoring records of this project show that the risks of the bored tunnel are under good control during the whole construction period. 
