Planning, Design and Construction of Deep Underground Tunnel for Flood Control and Drainage in Urban Areas in China

Abstract:

The waterlogging in some urban areas in China is serious, as a result, it is very important to build proper underground drainage tunnels in these areas. The successful cases of deep urban drainage tunnels in other countries are studied; meanwhile, the proper modes of planning, design and construction technology of deep urban drainage tunnel in China are discussed. Some main conclusions are as follows: 1) The principle of rainfall and sewage separation should be kept; and the flood control standard should be rather strict. 2) The drainage tunnels should be located underground 30-50 m in areas are prone to waterlogging. 3) A flood control and drainage system connecting tunnels, shallow pipelines and desilting riverway should be established. 4) The planning of deep drainage tunnels and underground expressway should be connected so as to improve the economical benefits of deep drainage tunnels.
