Abstract:

Side platform stations on the metro underground first floor easily cause confined and oppressive spaces, and the track-top wind ducts and full-height platform screen doors restrict large space construction. To address these issues, three innovative design proposals are introduced: (1) The connection between the platform and the hall is enlarged to reduce elongated platform space. (2) Track-top wind ducts and full-height platform screen doors are removed to create a larger space. (3) Curved skylights are installed to moderately elevate local indoor spaces. Additionally, corresponding solutions are proposed for the associated issues arising from these innovative designs. For instance, the security measures at Line 8 stations are removed while retaining the security functions at Line 3 stations to address the difficulty in securing areas with skylights. After removing the track-top wind ducts and full-height platform screen doors, the fire compartments in the station public area exceed 5 000 m2, and the smoke can be extracted from public area and track zone. To address these issues, measures such as strengthening fire separation and controlling fire loads, adjusting the tunnel smoke extraction plans, and enhancing station smoke extraction are implemented. Furthermore, the safety and reliability of the design scheme is validated through evacuation and smoke simulation analyses. These innovative measures have been applied in the Industrial Park station of the Suzhou metro line 8. The applicable results indicate that the implementation of these innovative designs effectively alleviate the oppressive feeling brought by elongated platform spaces, creating a transparent, open, and comfortable indoor environment, which significantly enhances the quality of the station environment and the travel experience of passengers.
