Abstract: With continued development of Taipei Rapid Transit System, the Metro projects are often constructed adjacent to existing Metro System or other construction works in recent years. Past construction experience was often applied to deal with the issue of adjacent construction in early times when computer software was not popularized. Due to rising performance of computer software, the complex behavior of the soil-structure interaction can be simulated and analyzed numerically. This paper discusses four different types of adjacent construction of Taipei Metro projects. In these case studies, numerical analyses are performed followed by mitigation measures proposed based on the results of analyses. Through comparison of predictions and monitoring data for some completed construction cases, the protection and mitigation measures have shown to receive its effectiveness. It is hoped that the discussion of adjacent construction projects in this paper provides a reference for similar projects.
