Shield Tunneling through Intermediate Ventilation Shaft on Smallradius Curve with Deep Overburden

Abstract: The rivercrossing tunnel on No. 2 line of Wuhan Metro is under deep overburden and high water pressure. Furthermore, the shield machine has to pass through the intermediate ventilation shaft along 350mradius curve. The original tunneling scheme is optimized and countermeasures, including the shield launching along the tangent line, the shield arriving under compensation, proper control of the boring parameters and guarantee the segment erection quality, are taken. In the end, the shield machine passes through the intermediate ventilation shaft successfully and safely. The paper can provide reference for similar projects in the future.
