Factors Affecting Longterm Stability of Railway Tunnels Structure and Developments of Structural Maintenance Guidelines and Associate Commentates

Abstract:

Tunnel maintenance and management work aimed to identify and document the variability or development of anomalies that affect tunnel service, and evaluate its influences on tunnel functionality, serviceability, structural safety and durability in order to respond according to the idea of sustainable use as soon as possible. In order to achieve the goal of complete life cycle maintenance and management for modern railway tunnel, factors including tunnel surrounding environment, geological conditions, construction quality, conditions of lining structure, possible loading variation during operation, requirements for maintenance and management were considered to propose an outline of basic requirements to serve as a reference for tunnel maintenance, management and inspection . The outline can also be modified according to individual needs and conditions to include supporting measures and detail commentates. This study reports the progress and thestateoftheart of structural maintenance for rock tunnels in Taiwan.
