Abstract: The application of TBMs in China in recent years is summarized. The characteristics and development trend of TBM tunneling technology are analyzed in term of service life, type, cutter head characteristics, sealing and lubricating of main bearing and muck cleaning. Conclusions drawn are as follows: 1)The service life and continuous tunneling capacity of TBMs are improved. 2)The applicability of TBMs to the works is improved and various types of TBMs exist. 3)The performance and the service life of cutter heads of TBMs are improved. 4)The sealing effect and service life of main bearing can be guaranteed due to the improvement of sealing mode and the adjustability of sealing positions. 5)The muck cleaning is mechanized. TBM tunneling technology will play a more and more important role in underground projects.
