Type Selection of Shields in Waterrich Kurkar Stratum in Israel

Abstract:

The shield type selection is the key to shield tunneling. Hence, the cutterhead structure, cutter arrangement, hinge design and torque configuration of the shield are studied in detail by analyzing the soil quality of the red line light rail project in Tel Aviv and considering the soil characteristics and the design of tunnel alignment. The study results show that: (1) The tunnel is successfully accomplished by using the EPB shield with a 43.18 cm doubleedged hob and a paneltype cutterhead with an opening rate of 38%. (2) The double hinge design of active and passive hinge is used, which has effectively solved the problem of 190 m small radius curve tunneling. (3) The problem of large construction torque in Kurkar stratum has been solved by adding driving motor, which can provide reference for the type selection of shield in Kurkar stratum in the future.
