Abstract: The shield tunneling technology used in the construction of Shenzhen Metro in these years is summarized, with the construction of No. 5 line of Shenzhen Metro as an example. The geological characteristics of Shenzhen and the adaptability of the shield machines are presented. The key construction technologies, including cutting tool arrangement, shield launching, shield advancing without load, shield transverse moving and end wall reinforcement, used in the mix geological conditions in Shenzhen are described with emphasis. The technology of shield tunneling crossing underneath buildings, rivers and railways, as well as the technology of shield tunneling through hard rocks and the technology of boulder treatment, are presented. The paper provides experience in shield tunneling in Shenzhen and shows the latest shield tunneling technology and shield tunneling results.
